Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu first gained popularity when Royce Gracie defeated martial artists who were physically larger and stronger than him in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu focuses on positioning and leverage. The goal is to use submissions (joint locks, chokes, and superior positions to strike from) to end the confrontation your opponent. If you can not defend yourself on the ground, you have not learned how to defend yourself. It only takes a basic understanding of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to dramatically increase your confidence and ability to defend yourself.
